Hestersoughtnottoacquireanythingbeyondasubsistence,oftheplainestandmostasceticdescription,forherself,andasimpleabundanceforherchild.Herowndresswasofthecoarsestmaterialsandthemostsombrehue,withonlythatoneornament—thescarletletter—whichitwasherdoomtowear.
