Butweperhapsexaggeratethegrayorsabletinge,whichundoubtedlycharacterizedthemoodandmannersoftheage.Thepersonsnowinthemarket-placeofBostonhadnotbeenborntoaninheritanceofPuritanicgloom.TheywerenativeEnglishmen,whosefathershadlivedinthesunnyrichnessoftheElizabethanepoch;atimewhenthelifeofEngland,viewedasonegreatmass,wouldappeartohavebeenasstately,magnificent,andjoyous,astheworldhaseverwitnessed.Hadtheyfollowedtheirhereditarytaste,theNewEnglandsettlerswouldhaveillustratedalleventsofpublicimportancebybonfires,banquets,pageantries,andprocessions.Norwouldithavebeenimpracticable,intheobservanceofmajesticceremonies,tocombinemirthfulrecreationwithsolemnity,andgive,asitwere,agrotesqueandbrilliantembroiderytothegreatrobeofstate,whichanation,atsuchfestivals,putson.Therewassomeshadowofanattemptofthiskindinthemodeofcelebratingthedayonwhichthepoliticalyearofthecolonycommenced.
