           Aliceknockedandranginvainforalongtime,butatlast,averyoldFrog,whowassittingunderatree,gotupandhobbledslowlytowardsher:hewasdressedinbrightyellow,andhadenormousbootson.

           ‘Whatisit,now?’theFrogsaidinadeephoarsewhisper.

           Aliceturnedround,readytofindfaultwithanybody.‘Where’stheservantwhosebusinessitistoanswerthedoor?’shebeganangrily.

           ‘Whichdoor?’saidtheFrog.

           Alicealmoststampedwithirritationattheslowdrawlinwhichhespoke.‘Thisdoor,ofcourse!’

           TheFroglookedatthedoorwithhislargedulleyesforaminute:thenhewentnearerandrubbeditwithhisthumb,asifheweretryingwhetherthepaintwouldcomeoff;thenhelookedatAlice.

           ‘Toanswerthedoor?’hesaid.‘What’sitbeenaskingof?’HewassohoarsethatAlicecouldscarcelyhearhim.

           ‘Idon’tknowwhatyoumean,’shesaid.

           ‘ItalksEnglish,doesn’tI?’theFrogwenton.‘Orareyoudeaf?Whatdiditaskyou?’

           ‘Nothing!’Alicesaidimpatiently.
