ThesinisterabsenceofCarmillamadetheremembranceofthescenemorehorribletome.Thearrangementsforthenightweresingular.Twoservants,andMadameweretositupinmyroomthatnight;andtheecclesiasticwithmyfatherkeptwatchintheadjoiningdressingroom.
Thepriesthadperformedcertainsolemnritesthatnight,thepurportofwhichIdidnotunderstandanymorethanIcomprehendedthereasonofthisextraordinaryprecautiontakenformysafetyduringsleep.
