Ididindeedentirelycomprehendmy‘misfortune,’orratherthegreatchancebestowedonmeofwinningsomethingfarhigherthanallthecoffersofMammon;Ireadinmylossofworld’scashtheworkingofsuchamercifulprovidenceandpityasgavemeagranderhopethananyIhadeverknown.Clearbeforemerosethevisionofthatmostdivineandbeautifulnecessityofhappiness—Work!—thegrandandtoooftenmisprizedAngelofLabour,whichmouldsthemindofman,steadieshishands,controlshisbrain,purifieshispassions,andstrengthenshiswholementalandphysicalbeing.Arushofenergyandhealthfilledmyveins—andIthankedGoddevoutlyforthegoldenopportunitiesheldoutafreshformetoacceptanduse.Gratitudethereshouldbeineveryhumansoulforeverygiftofheaven—butnothingmeritsmorethankfulnessandpraisetotheCreatorthanthecalltowork,andtheabilitytorespondtoit.
