Itisnothingtomenow—now,whenwithouthope,orfaithorlove,Iamabouttotakethefinalplungeintoeternaldarknessandsilence—butforthesakeofthosewhohavethecomfortofareligionIask,why,inaso-calledChristiancountry,issuchahideousblasphemyas‘BeforeaCrucifix’allowedtocirculateamongthepeoplewithoutsomuchasonereprooffromthosewhoelectthemselvesjudgesofliterature?Ihaveseenmanynoblewriterscondemnedunheard—manyhavebeenaccusedofblasphemy,whoseworkstendquitetheotherway—buttheselinesarepermittedtoworktheircruelmischiefunchecked,andthewriterofthemisglorifiedasthoughhewereabenefactortomankind.Iquotethemhere,frombittermemory,thatImaynotbedeemedasexaggeratingtheirnature—
