Iwassilentforaminuteorsooutofsheersurprise,whilehewatchedmeearnestly,hisfacepaleandexpectant.Acuriousshockofsomethinglikecompunctionstartledmyconscience,andforabriefspaceIwasmovedtoavagueregret—regretthatwithalltheenormouscapabilityIpossessedofdoinggoodtonumbersofmyfellow-creatureswiththevastwealthIowned,Ihadnotattainedtoanyhighermoralattitudethanthatrepresentedbythefrivolousfolkwhomakeupwhatiscalledthe‘UpperTen’ofsociety.
