           Theirmovementswereswiftandperfectlynoiselesstheyleaped,jumpedandtwirledlikelittlegnomesoverflowerbeds,undershrubberies,andalongtheedgesofpathsandterraces,manyofthemclimbingtreeswiththerapidityandagilityofmonkeys,andwherevertheywenttheyleftbehindthematrailofbrilliantlight.Soon,bytheirefforts,allthegroundswereilluminatedwithamagnificencethatcouldnothavebeenequalledevenbythehistoricfêtesatVersaillestalloaksandcedarsweretransformedtopyramidsoffire-blossomseverybranchwasloadedwithcolouredlampsintheshapeofstarsrocketshissedupintotheclearspaceshoweringdownbouquets,wreathsandribbonsofflamelinesofredandazureranglowinglyalongthegrass-borders,andamidtheenthusiasticapplauseoftheassembledspectators,eighthugefire-fountainsofallcolourssprangupinvariouscornersofthegarden,whileanenormousgoldenballoon,dazzlinglyluminous,ascendedslowlyintotheairandremainedpoisedaboveus,sendingfromitsglitteringcarhundredsofgem-likebirdsandbutterfliesonfierywings,thatcircledroundandroundforamomentandthenvanished.Whilewewereyetloudlyclappingthesplendideffectofthissky-spectacle,atroopofbeautifulgirl-dancersinwhitecamerunningacrossthegrass,wavinglongsilverywandsthatweretippedwithelectricstars,andtothesoundofstrangetinklingmusic,seeminglyplayedinthedistanceonglassbells,theycommencedafantasticdanceofthewildestyetmostgracefulcharacter.
