Thepolewassurroundedbyadoubleringofsmallchildren—childrensobeautifulinfaceanddaintyinform,thattheymightverywellhavebeentakenforlittlefairiesfromsomeenchantedwoodland.Theboyswerecladastinyforesters,indoubletsofgreen,withpinkcapsontheircurlylocks—thegirlswereinwhite,withtheirhairflowinglooselyovertheirshoulders,andwreathsofMay-blossomcrowningtheirbrows.Assoonastheguestsappearedonthescene,theseexquisitelittlecreaturescommencedtheirdance,eachonetakingatrailofblossomoraribbonpendantfromtheMay-pole,andweavingitwiththeothersintonoendofbeautifulandfantasticdesigns.Ilookedon,asamazedandfascinatedasanyonepresent,atthewonderfullightnessandeasewithwhichthesechildrentrippedandran;—theirtinytwinklingfeetseemedscarcelytotouchtheturf—theirfacesweresolovely—theireyessobright,thatitwasapositiveenchantmenttowatchthem.Eachfiguretheyexecutedwasmoreintricateandeffectivethanthelast,andtheplauditsofthespectatorsgrewmoreandmoreenthusiastic,tillpresentlycamethefinale,inwhichallthelittlegreenforestersclimbedupthepoleandclungthere,peltingthewhite-robedmaidensbelowwithcowslip-balls,knotsofroses,bunchesofviolets,posiesofbuttercups,daisiesandclover,whichthegirl-childrenintheirturnlaughinglythrewamongtheadmiringguests.
