Ihadtobegreeted,complimented,flattered,andcongratulatedonmyapproachingmarriagebyscoresofhypocriteswhonearlyshookmyhandoffintheirenthusiasmformywealth.HadIbecomesuddenlypoor,Ithoughtgrimly,notoneofthemwouldhavelentmeasovereign!Theguestskeptonarrivinginshoals,andwhentherewereaboutthreeorfourhundredassembled,aburstofexquisitemusicsounded,andaprocessionofpagesinscarletandgold,marchingtwobytwoappeared,carryingtraysfulloftherarestflowerstiedupinbouquets,whichtheyofferedtoalltheladiespresent.Exclamationsofdelightaroseoneveryside—exclamationswhichwereforthemostparthigh-pitchedandnoisy—forthe‘swaggerset’havelongceasedtocultivatesoftnessofvoiceorrefinementofaccent—andonceortwicethedetestableslangword,‘ripping’escapedfromthelipsofafewdashingdames,reputedtobe‘leaders’ofstyle.Reposeofmanner,dignityandeleganceofdeportment,however,arenolongertobediscoveredamongthepresent‘racing’duchessesandgamblingcountessesofthebluestbluebloodofEngland,soonedoesnotexpectthesegracesofdistinctionfromthem.Theloudertheycantalk,andthemoreslangtheycanadoptfromthelanguageoftheirgroomsandstable-boys,themorearetheyjudgedtobe‘intheswim’and‘uptodate.’Ispeak,ofcourse,ofthemodernscionsofaristocracy.
