           ‘Well,I’mverygladtohearit,’saidScrooge’snephew,‘becauseIhaven’tgreatfaithintheseyounghousekeepers.Whatdoyousay,Topper?’

           TopperhadclearlygothiseyeupononeofScrooge’sniece’ssisters,forheansweredthatabachelorwasawretchedoutcast,whohadnorighttoexpressanopiniononthesubject.WhereatScrooge’sniece’ssistertheplumponewiththelacetucker:nottheonewiththerosesblushed.

           ‘Iwasonlygoingtosay,’saidScrooge’snephew,‘thattheconsequenceofhistakingadisliketous,andnotmakingmerrywithus,is,asIthink,thathelosessomepleasantmoments,whichcoulddohimnoharm.Iamsurehelosespleasantercompanionsthanhecanfindinhisownthoughts,eitherinhismouldyoldoffice,orhisdustychambers.Imeantogivehimthesamechanceeveryyear,whetherhelikesitornot,forIpityhim.
