           ScroogereverentlydisclaimedallintentiontooffendoranyknowledgeofhavingwilfullybonnetedtheSpiritatanyperiodofhislife.Hethenmadeboldtoinquirewhatbusinessbroughthimthere.

           ‘Yourwelfare,’saidtheGhost.

           Scroogeexpressedhimselfmuchobliged,butcouldnothelpthinkingthatanightofunbrokenrestwouldhavebeenmoreconducivetothatend.TheSpiritmusthaveheardhimthinking,foritsaidimmediately:

           ‘Iammortal,’Scroogeremonstrated,‘andliabletofall.
