           "Deathisagreatpricetopayforaredrose,"criedtheNightingale,"andLifeisverydeartoall.Itispleasanttositinthegreenwood,andtowatchtheSuninhischariotofgold,andtheMooninherchariotofpearl.Sweetisthescentofthehawthorn,andsweetarethebluebellsthathideinthevalley,andtheheatherthatblowsonthehill.YetLoveisbetterthanLife,andwhatistheheartofabirdcomparedtotheheartofaman?"

           Soshespreadherbrownwingsforflight,andsoaredintotheair.Shesweptoverthegardenlikeashadow,andlikeashadowshesailedthroughthegrove.

           TheyoungStudentwasstilllyingonthegrass,whereshehadlefthim,andthetearswerenotyetdryinhisbeautifuleyes.

           "Behappy,"criedtheNightingale,"behappy;youshallhaveyourredrose.Iwillbuilditoutofmusicbymoonlight,andstainitwithmyownheart’s-blood.AllthatIaskofyouinreturnisthatyouwillbeatruelover,forLoveiswiserthanPhilosophy,thoughheiswise,andmightierthanPower,thoughheismighty.Flame-colouredarehiswings,andcolouredlikeflameishisbody.
