           Assoonastheyenteredthetown,Pinocchionoticedthatallthestreetswerefilledwithhairlessdogs,yawningfromhunger; withshearedsheep,tremblingwithcold;withcomblesschickens,beggingforagrainofwheat;withlargebutterflies,unabletousetheirwingsbecausetheyhadsoldalltheirlovelycolors; withtaillesspeacocks,ashamedtoshowthemselves;andwithbedraggledpheasants,scuttlingawayhurriedly,grievingfortheirbrightfeathersofgoldandsilver,losttothemforever. 

           Throughthiscrowdofpaupersandbeggars,abeautifulcoachpassednowandagain.WithinitsateitheraFox,aHawk,oraVulture. 

           "WhereistheFieldofWonders?"askedPinocchio,growingtiredofwaiting. 

           "Bepatient.Itisonlyafewmorestepsaway." 

           Theypassedthroughthecityand,justoutsidethewalls,theysteppedintoalonelyfield,whichlookedmoreorlesslikeanyotherfield. 

           "Hereweare,"saidtheFoxtotheMarionette."Digaholehereandputthegoldpiecesintoit." 

           TheMarionetteobeyed.Hedugthehole,putthefourgoldpiecesintoit,andcoveredthemupverycarefully. "Now,"saidtheFox,"gotothatnear-bybrook,bringbackapailfullofwater,andsprinkleitoverthespot." 

           Pinocchiofollowedthedirectionsclosely,but,ashehadnopail,hepulledoffhisshoe,filleditwithwater,andsprinkledtheearthwhichcoveredthegold.Thenheasked: 

           "Anythingelse?" 

           "Nothingelse,"answeredtheFox."Nowwecango.Returnherewithintwentyminutesandyouwillfindthevinegrownandthebranchesfilledwithgoldpieces"
