           Thefurnitureandpictureswereofthemostcommonandvulgardescription,saveintheonechamberatthewindowofwhichIhadseenthestrangeface.Thatwascomfortableandelegant,andallmysuspicionsroseintoafierce,bitterflamewhenIsawthatonthemantelpiecestoodacopyofafull-lengthphotographofmywife,whichhadbeentakenatmyrequestonlythreemonthsago.

           "Istayedlongenoughtomakecertainthatthehousewasabsolutelyempty.ThenIleftit,feelingaweightatmyheartsuchasIhadneverhadbefore.MywifecameoutintothehallasIenteredmyhouse;butIwastoohurtandangrytospeakwithher,and,pushingpasther,Imademywayintomystudy.Shefollowedme,however,beforeIcouldclosethedoor.

           "‘IamsorrythatIbrokemypromise,Jack,"saidshe,‘butifyouknewallthecircumstancesIamsurethatyouwouldforgiveme.’

           "‘Tellmeeverything,then,"saidI.

           "‘Icannot,Jack,Icannot,"shecried.

           "‘Untilyoutellmewhoitisthathasbeenlivinginthatcottage,andwhoitistowhomyouhavegiventhatphotograph,therecanneverbeanyconfidencebetweenus,"saidI,andbreakingawayfromherIleftthehouse.Thatwasyesterday,Mr.Holmes,andIhavenotseenhersince,nordoIknowanythingmoreaboutthisstrangebusiness.Itisthefirstshadowthathascomebetweenus,andithassoshakenmethatIdonotknowwhatIshoulddoforthebest.
