           Wewereabletofindout,bycommunicatingwiththegentlemanwhohadansweredtheadvertisement,thattheunfortunateyoungladycameofawealthyGrecianfamily,andthatshehadbeenonavisittosomefriendsinEngland.WhilethereshehadmetayoungmannamedHaroldLatimer,whohadacquiredanascendencyoverherandhadeventuallypersuadedhertoflywithhim.Herfriends,shockedattheevent,hadcontentedthemselveswithinformingherbrotheratAthens,andhadthenwashedtheirhandsofthematter.Thebrother,onhisarrivalinEngland,hadimprudentlyplacedhimselfinthepowerofLatimerandofhisassociate,whosenamewasWilsonKemp—amanofthefoulestantecedents.Thesetwo,findingthatthroughhisignoranceofthelanguagehewashelplessintheirhands,hadkepthimaprisoner,andhadendeavouredbycrueltyandstarvationtomakehimsignawayhisownandhissister’sproperty.Theyhadkepthiminthehousewithoutthegirl’sknowledge,andtheplasteroverthefacehadbeenforthepurposeofmakingrecognitiondifficultincasesheshouldevercatchaglimpseofhim.Herfeminineperceptions,however,hadinstantlyseenthroughthedisguisewhen,ontheoccasionoftheinterpreter’svisit,shehadseenhimforthefirsttime.Thepoorgirl,however,washerselfaprisoner,fortherewasnooneaboutthehouseexceptthemanwhoactedascoachman,andhiswife,bothofwhomweretoolsoftheconspirators
