           "Myfirstconjecturewasthatpossiblytherehadbeensomepassagesbetweenthisyoungladyandtheoldsoldier,whichtheformerhadnowconfessedtothewife.Thatwouldaccountfortheangryreturn,andalsoforthegirl’sdenialthatanythinghadoccurred.Norwoulditbeentirelyincompatiblewithmostofthewordsoverheard.ButtherewasthereferencetoDavid,andtherewastheknownaffectionofthecolonelforhiswifetoweighagainstit,tosaynothingofthetragicintrusionofthisotherman,whichmight,ofcourse,beentirelydisconnectedwithwhathadgonebefore.Itwasnoteasytopickone’ssteps,but,onthewhole,IwasinclinedtodismisstheideathattherehadbeenanythingbetweenthecolonelandMissMorrison,butmorethaneverconvincedthattheyoungladyheldtheclueastowhatitwaswhichhadturnedMrs.
