           Theyappear,however,tohavequicklyadaptedthemselves,andMrs.Barclayhasalways,Iunderstand,beenaspopularwiththeladiesoftheregimentasherhusbandwaswithhisbrotherofficers.Imayaddthatshewasawomanofgreatbeauty,andthatevennow,whenshehasbeenmarriedforupwardofthirtyyears,sheisstillofastrikingandqueenlyappearance.

           "ColonelBarclay’sfamilylifeappearstohavebeenauniformlyhappyone.MajorMurphy,towhomIowemostofmyfacts,assuresmethathehasneverheardofanymisunderstandingbetweenthepair.Onthewhole,hethinksthatBarclay’sdevotiontohiswifewasgreaterthanhiswife’stoBarclay.Hewasacutelyuneasyifhewereabsentfromherforaday.She,ontheotherhand,thoughdevotedandfaithful,waslessobtrusivelyaffectionate.Buttheywereregardedintheregimentastheverymodelofamiddle-agedcouple.Therewasabsolutelynothingintheirmutualrelationstopreparepeopleforthetragedywhichwastofollow.

           "ColonelBarclayhimselfseemstohavehadsomesingulartraitsinhischaracter.Hewasadashing,jovialoldsoldierinhisusualmood,buttherewereoccasionsonwhichheseemedtoshowhimselfcapableofconsiderableviolenceandvindictiveness.Thissideofhisnature,however,appearsnevertohavebeenturnedtowardshiswife.AnotherfactwhichhadstruckMajorMurphyandthreeoutoffiveoftheotherofficerswithwhomIconversedwasthesingularsortofdepressionwhichcameuponhimattimes.
