           NevercertainlyhaveIseenaplainerconfessionofguiltuponhumancountenances.Theoldermanseemednumbedanddazed,withaheavy,sullenexpressionuponhisstronglymarkedface.Theson,ontheotherhand,haddroppedallthatjaunty,dashingstylewhichhadcharacterizedhim,andtheferocityofadangerouswildbeastgleamedinhisdarkeyesanddistortedhishandsomefeatures.Theinspectorsaidnothing,but,steppingtothedoor,heblewhiswhistle.Twoofhisconstablescameatthecall.

           "Ihavenoalternative,Mr.Cunningham,"saidhe."Itrustthatthismayallprovetobeanabsurdmistake,butyoucanseethatAh,wouldyou?Dropit!"Hestruckoutwithhishand,andarevolverwhichtheyoungermanwasintheactofcockingclattereddownuponthefloor.
