           SuddenlytherehadrecurredtoChichikovlong-unknown,long-unfamiliarfeelings.Somethingseemedtobestrivingtocometolifeagaininhimsomethingdimandremote,somethingwhichhadbeencrushedoutofhisboyhoodbythedreary,deadeningeducationofhisyouthfuldays,byhisdesolatehome,byhissubsequentlackoffamilyties,bythepovertyandniggardlinessofhisearlyimpressions,bythegrimeyeoffateaneyewhichhadalwaysseemedtoberegardinghimasthroughamisty,mournful,frost-encrustedwindow-pane,andtobemockingathisstrugglesforfreedom.Andasthesefeelingscamebacktothepenitentagroanburstfromhislips,and,coveringhisfacewithhishands,hemoaned:“Itisalltrue,itisalltrue!”
