           Thepartyturnedtotheright,andenteredthegatesofanancientcourtyardattachedtoanold-fashionedhouseofatypenolongerbuiltthetypewhichhashugegablessupportingahigh-pitchedroof.Inthecentreofthecourtyardtwogreatlimetreescoveredhalfthesurroundingspacewithshade,whilebeneaththemwererangedanumberofwoodenbenches,andthewholewasencircledwitharingofblossominglilacsandcherrytreeswhich,likeabeadednecklace,reinforcedthewoodenfence,andalmostburieditbeneaththeirclustersofleavesandflowers.Thehouse,too,stoodalmostconcealedbythisgreenery,exceptthatthefrontdoorandthewindowspeeredpleasantlythroughthefoliage,andthathereandtherebetweenthestemsofthetreestherecouldbecaughtglimpsesofthekitchenregions,thestorehouses,andthecellar.Lastly,aroundthewholestoodagrove,fromtherecessesofwhichcametheechoingsongsofnightingales.
