           HerePlatonsethimselftogiveSelifansomedirectionsastotheway,anecessaryproceedinginviewofthefactthatSelifancouldhardlymaintainhisseatonthebox.TwicePetrushka,too,hadfallenheadlong,andthisnecessitatedbeingtiedtohisperchwithapieceofrope.“Whataclown!”hadbeenChichikov’sonlycomment.

           “Youmustaskhimyourself.Heissoexcellentahusbandmanthatnothingeverfailswithhim.Yousee,heknowsthesoil,andalsoknowswhatoughttobeplantedbesidewhat,andwhatkindsoftimberarethebestneighbourhoodforgrain.Again,everythingonhisestateismadetoperformatleastthreeorfourdifferentfunctions.Forinstance,hemakeshistimbernotonlyserveastimber,butalsoserveasaproviderofmoistureandshadetoagivenstretchofland,andthenasafertiliserwithitsfallenleaves.
