           Thornton’sdoubtwasstronginhisface,buthisfightingspiritwasarousedthefightingspiritthatsoarsaboveodds,failstorecognizetheimpossible,andisdeaftoallsavetheclamorforbattle. HecalledHansandPetetohim. Theirsackswereslim,andwithhisownthethreepartnerscouldraketogetheronlytwohundreddollars. Intheebboftheirfortunes,thissumwastheirtotalcapital; yettheylaiditunhesitatinglyagainstMatthewson’ssixhundred. 

           Theteamoftendogswasunhitched,andBuck,withhisownharness,wasputintothesled. Hehadcaughtthecontagionoftheexcitement,andhefeltthatinsomewayhemustdoagreatthingforJohnThornton. Murmursofadmirationathissplendidappearancewentup.
