           Buttheprogressshorewardwasslow;theprogressdown-streamamazinglyrapid. Frombelowcamethefatalroaringwherethewildcurrentwentwilderandwasrentinshredsandspraybytherockswhichthrustthroughliketheteethofanenormouscomb. Thesuckofthewaterasittookthebeginningofthelaststeeppitchwasfrightful,andThorntonknewthattheshorewasimpossible. Hescrapedfuriouslyoverarock,bruisedacrossasecond,andstruckathirdwithcrushingforce. Heclutcheditsslipperytopwithbothhands,releasingBuck,andabovetheroarofthechurningwatershouted: "Go,Buck!Go!" 

           Buckcouldnotholdhisown,andsweptondown-stream,strugglingdesperately,butunabletowinback. WhenheheardThornton’scommandrepeated,hepartlyrearedoutofthewater,throwinghisheadhigh,asthoughforalastlook,thenturnedobedientlytowardthebank. HeswampowerfullyandwasdraggedashorebyPeteandHansattheverypointwhereswimmingceasedtobepossibleanddestructionbegan. 

           Theyknewthatthetimeamancouldclingtoaslipperyrockinthefaceofthatdrivingcurrentwasamatterofminutes, andtheyranasfastastheycouldupthebanktoapointfarabovewhereThorntonwashangingon.
