           Soabodyoftwentypolice,fillingtwocarriagesandanautomobile, hadsetoutinthelateafternoonwiththeshiveringsquatterasaguide. Attheendofthepassableroadtheyalighted,andformilessplashedoninsilencethroughtheterriblecypresswoodswheredaynevercame. UglyrootsandmalignanthangingnoosesofSpanishmossbesetthem,andnowandthenapileofdankstonesorfragmentofarottingwallintensifiedbyitshintofmorbidhabitationadepressionwhicheverymalformedtreeandeveryfungousisletcombinedtocreate. Atlengththesquattersettlement,amiserablehuddleofhuts,hoveinsight;andhystericaldwellersranouttoclusteraroundthegroupofbobbinglanterns. Themuffledbeatoftomtomswasnowfaintlyaudiblefar,farahead;andacurdlingshriekcameatinfrequentintervalswhenthewindshifted. Areddishglare,too,seemedtofilterthroughpaleundergrowthbeyondtheendlessavenuesofforestnight.Reluctanteventobeleftaloneagain,eachoneofthecowedsquattersrefusedpoint-blanktoadvanceanotherinchtowardthesceneofunholyworship,soInspectorLegrasseandhisnineteencolleaguesplungedonunguidedintoblackarcadesofhorrorthatnoneofthemhadevertrodbefore. 

           Theregionnowenteredbythepolicewasoneoftraditionallyevilrepute,substantiallyunknownanduntraversedbywhitemen. Therewerelegendsofahiddenlakeunglimpsedbymortalsight,inwhichdweltahuge,formlesswhitepolypousthingwithluminouseyes; andsquatterswhisperedthatbatwingeddevilsflewupoutofcavernsininnerearthtoworshipitatmidnight.
