           Atthatmomenttheybecameawareofourpresence.Poirotsteppedforward,andwithmanyapologiesexplainedthathehadlefthisstickinthehall.Ratherreluctantly,itseemedtome,Mrs.Maltraversmadethenecessaryintroduction.

           “MonsieurPoirot,CaptainBlack.”

           Afewminutes’chatensued,inthecourseofwhichPoirotelicitedthefactthatCaptainBlackwasputtingupattheAnchorInn.Themissingsticknothavingbeendiscovered(whichwasnotsurprising),Poirotutteredmoreapologiesandwewithdrew.

           Wereturnedtothevillageatagreatpace,andPoirotmadeabeelinefortheAnchorInn.

           “HereweestablishourselvesuntilourfriendtheCaptainreturns,”heexplained.“YounoticethatIemphasizedthepointthatwewerereturningtoLondonbythefirsttrain?PossiblyyouthoughtImeantit.Butno—youobservedMrs.Maltravers’facewhenshecaughtsightofthisyoungBlack?Shewasclearlytakenaback,andhe—ehbien,hewasverydevoted,didyounotthinkso?AndhewashereonTuesdaynight—thedaybeforeMr.Maltraversdied.WemustinvestigatethedoingsofCaptainBlack,Hastings.”

           Inabouthalfanhourweespiedourquarryapproachingtheinn.Poirotwentoutandaccostedhimandpresentlybroughthimuptotheroomwehadengaged.
