Thewomanexplainedthatabouttwoyearsandahalfagoworkmenhadbeeninthehousetodocertainrepairs.Shewasquitevagueastowhattherepairswere.Herviewseemedtobethatthewholethingwasafadofhermaster’sandquiteunnecessary.Partofthetimetheworkmenhadbeeninthestudy;butwhattheyhaddonethereshecouldnotsay,ashermasterhadnotleteitherofthemintotheroomwhilsttheworkwasinprogress.Unfortunately,theycouldnotrememberthenameofthefirmemployed,beyondthefactthatitwasaPlymouthone.
“Weprogress,Hastings,”saidPoirot,rubbinghishandsastheBakerslefttheroom.“ClearlyhemadeasecondwillandthenhadworkmenfromPlymouthintomakeasuitablehiding-place.Insteadofwastingtimetakingupthefloorandtappingthewalls,wewillgotoPlymouth.”
Withalittletrouble,wewereabletogettheinformationwewanted.Afteroneortwoessays,wefoundthefirmemployedbyMr.Marsh.
Theiremployeeshadallbeenwiththemmanyyears,anditwaseasytofindthetwomenwhohadworkedunderMr.Marsh’sorders.Theyrememberedthejobperfectly.
