Mrs.Cavendishwascomingdownthestairs.Itmayhavebeenmyfancy,butshe,too,waslookingoddanddisturbed.
“HadagoodwalkwithDr.Bauerstein?”Iasked,tryingtoappearasindifferentasIcould.
“Ididn’tgo,”sherepliedabruptly.“WhereisMrs.Inglethorp?”
“Intheboudoir.”
Herhandclencheditselfonthebanisters,thensheseemedtonerveherselfforsomeencounter,andwentrapidlypastmedownthestairsacrossthehalltotheboudoir,thedoorofwhichsheshutbehindher.
AsIranouttothetenniscourtafewmomentslater,Ihadtopasstheopenboudoirwindow,andwasunabletohelpoverhearingthefollowingscrapofdialogue.MaryCavendishwassayinginthevoiceofawomandesperatelycontrollingherself:

TowhichMrs.Inglethorpreplied:
“MydearMary,ithasnothingtodowiththatmatter.”
