           Hedidnotseemtohaveheardher,forwithoutawordheturnedonhisheelandwentoutofthehouse.

           Isuggestedaquickgameoftennisbeforesupperand,Cynthiaagreeing,Iranupstairstofetchmyracquet.

           Mrs.Cavendishwascomingdownthestairs.Itmayhavebeenmyfancy,butshe,too,waslookingoddanddisturbed.

           “HadagoodwalkwithDr.Bauerstein?”Iasked,tryingtoappearasindifferentasIcould.

           “Ididn’tgo,”sherepliedabruptly.“WhereisMrs.Inglethorp?”

           “Intheboudoir.”

           Herhandclencheditselfonthebanisters,thensheseemedtonerveherselfforsomeencounter,andwentrapidlypastmedownthestairsacrossthehalltotheboudoir,thedoorofwhichsheshutbehindher.

           AsIranouttothetenniscourtafewmomentslater,Ihadtopasstheopenboudoirwindow,andwasunabletohelpoverhearingthefollowingscrapofdialogue.MaryCavendishwassayinginthevoiceofawomandesperatelycontrollingherself:

           “Thenyouwon’tshowittome?”

           TowhichMrs.Inglethorpreplied:

           “MydearMary,ithasnothingtodowiththatmatter.”

           “Thenshowittome.”

           “Itellyouitisnotwhatyouimagine.Itdoesnotconcernyouintheleast.”

           TowhichMaryCavendishreplied,witharisingbitterness:

           “Ofcourse,Imighthaveknownyouwouldshieldhim.
