Thegardeners’evidence,astothewitnessingofthewillwastaken,andthenDorcaswascalled.
Dorcas,faithfultoher“younggentlemen,”deniedstrenuouslythatitcouldhavebeenJohn’svoicesheheard,andresolutelydeclared,intheteethofeverything,thatitwasMr.Inglethorpwhohadbeenintheboudoirwithhermistress.Aratherwistfulsmilepassedacrossthefaceoftheprisonerinthedock.Heknewonlytoowellhowuselesshergallantdefiancewas,sinceitwasnottheobjectofthedefencetodenythispoint.Mrs.Cavendish,ofcourse,couldnotbecalledupontogiveevidenceagainstherhusband.
Aftervariousquestionsonothermatters,Mr.Philipsasked:
“InthemonthofJunelast,doyourememberaparcelarrivingforMr.LawrenceCavendishfromParkson’s?”
Dorcasshookherhead.
“Idon’tremember,sir.Itmayhavedone,butMr.LawrencewasawayfromhomepartofJune.”
“Intheeventofaparcelarrivingforhimwhilsthewasaway,whatwouldbedonewithit?”
“Itwouldeitherbeputinhisroomorsentonafterhim.”
“Byyou?”
“No,sir,Ishouldleaveitonthehalltable.ItwouldbeMissHowardwhowouldattendtoanythinglikethat.”
EvelynHowardwascalledand,afterbeingexaminedonotherpoints,wasquestionedastotheparcel.
“Don’tremember.Lotsofparcelscome.
