           Theyhadgotintothehabitofputtingthingsintothisroomthattheyhadnoroomforanywhereelse,andtherewerenowmanysuchthingsasoneoftheroomsintheflathadbeenrentedouttothreegentlemen.Theseearnestgentlemen—allthreeofthemhadfullbeards,asGregorlearnedpeeringthroughthecrackinthedooroneday—werepainfullyinsistentonthings’beingtidy.Thismeantnotonlyintheirownroombut,sincetheyhadtakenaroominthisestablishment,intheentireflatandespeciallyinthekitchen.Unnecessaryclutterwassomethingtheycouldnottolerate,especiallyifitwasdirty.Theyhadmoreoverbroughtmostoftheirownfurnishingsandequipmentwiththem.Forthisreason,manythingshadbecomesuperfluouswhich,althoughtheycouldnotbesold,thefamilydidnotwishtodiscard.AllthesethingsfoundtheirwayintoGregor’sroom.Thedustbinsfromthekitchenfoundtheirwayintheretoo.Thecharwomanwasalwaysinahurry,andanythingshecouldn’tuseforthetimebeingshewouldjustchuckinthere.He,fortunately,wouldusuallyseenomorethantheobjectandthehandthatheldit.Thewomanmostlikelymeanttofetchthethingsbackoutagainwhenshehadtimeandtheopportunity,ortothroweverythingoutinonego,butwhatactuallyhappenedwasthattheywereleftwheretheylandedwhentheyhadfirstbeenthrownunlessGregormadehiswaythroughthejunkandmoveditsomewhereelse.
