           Whenhisfatherthensaidnothingshewouldadd,sothathewouldnotfeelselfish,thatshecouldsendthehousekeeperforit,butthenhisfatherwouldclosethematterwithabig,loud“No”,andnomorewouldbesaid.

           Evenbeforethefirstdayhadcometoanend,hisfatherhadexplainedtoGregor’smotherandsisterwhattheirfinancesandprospectswere.Nowandthenhestoodupfromthetableandtooksomereceiptordocumentfromthelittlecashboxhehadsavedfromhisbusinesswhenithadcollapsedfiveyearsearlier.Gregorheardhowheopenedthecomplicatedlockandthencloseditagainafterhehadtakentheitemhewanted.WhatheheardhisfathersaywassomeofthefirstgoodnewsthatGregorheardsincehehadfirstbeenincarceratedinhisroom.Hehadthoughtthatnothingatallremainedfromhisfather’sbusiness,atleasthehadnevertoldhimanythingdifferent,andGregorhadneveraskedhimaboutitanyway.Theirbusinessmisfortunehadreducedthefamilytoastateoftotaldespair,andGregor’sonlyconcernatthattimehadbeentoarrangethingssothattheycouldallforgetaboutitasquicklyaspossible.Sothenhestartedworkingespeciallyhard,withafieryvigourthatraisedhimfromajuniorsalesmantoatravellingrepresentativealmostovernight,bringingwithitthechancetoearnmoneyinquitedifferentways.Gregorconvertedhissuccessatworkstraightintocashthathecouldlayonthetableathomeforthebenefitofhisastonishedanddelightedfamily.
