“AmIlesssensitivethanIusedtobe,then?”,hethought,andwasalreadysuckinggreedilyatthecheesewhichhadimmediately,almostcompellingly,attractedhimmuchmorethantheotherfoodsonthenewspaper.Quicklyoneafteranother,hiseyeswateringwithpleasure,heconsumedthecheese,thevegetablesandthesauce;thefreshfoods,ontheotherhand,hedidn’tlikeatall,andevendraggedthethingshedidwanttoeatalittlewayawayfromthembecausehecouldn’tstandthesmell.Longafterhehadfinishedeatingandlaylethargicinthesameplace,hissisterslowlyturnedthekeyinthelockasasigntohimthatheshouldwithdraw.Hewasimmediatelystartled,althoughhehadbeenhalfasleep,andhehurriedbackunderthecouch.Butheneededgreatself-controltostaythereevenfortheshorttimethathissisterwasintheroom,aseatingsomuchfoodhadroundedouthisbodyalittleandhecouldhardlybreatheinthatnarrowspace.Halfsuffocating,hewatchedwithbulgingeyesashissisterunselfconsciouslytookabroomandsweptuptheleft-overs,mixingtheminwiththefoodhehadnoteventouchedatallasifitcouldnotbeusedanymore.Shequicklydroppeditallintoabin,closeditwithitswoodenlid,andcarriedeverythingout.ShehadhardlyturnedherbackbeforeGregorcameoutagainfromunderthecouchandstretchedhimself.
