           Ah,howthepoorlittlesisterdidlamentwhenshehadtofetchthewater,andhowhertearsdidflowdownoverhercheeks! "DearGod,dohelpus,"shecried."Ifthewildbeastsintheforesthadbutdevouredus,weshouldatanyratehavediedtogether." "Justkeepthynoisetothyself,"saidtheoldwoman,"allthatwon’thelptheeatall." 

           Earlyinthemorning,Grethelhadtogooutandhangupthecauldronwiththewater,andlightthefire. "Wewillbakefirst,"saidtheoldwoman,"Ihavealreadyheatedtheoven,andkneadedthedough."ShepushedpoorGrethelouttotheoven,fromwhichflamesoffirewerealreadydarting. "Creepin,"saidthewitch,"andseeifitisproperlyheated,sothatwecanshutthebreadin." AndwhenonceGrethelwasinside,sheintendedtoshuttheovenandletherbakeinit,andthenshewouldeather,too.ButGrethelsawwhatshehadinhermind,andsaid, "IdonotknowhowIamtodoit;howdoyougetin?" "Sillygoose,"saidtheoldwoman,"Thedoorisbigenough;justlook,Icangetinmyself!"andshecreptupandthrustherheadintotheoven. ThenGrethelgaveherapushthatdroveherfarintoit,andshuttheirondoor,andfastenedthebolt.Oh!thenshebegantohowlquitehorribly,butGrethelranaway,andthegodlesswitchwasmiserablyburnttodeath. 

           Grethel,however,ranlikelightningtoHansel,openedhislittlestable,andcried, "Hansel,wearesaved!Theoldwitchisdead!" ThenHanselsprangoutlikeabirdfromitscagewhenthedoorisopenedforit.
