Ганзель и Гретель

           Theywalkedthewholenightandallthenextdaytoofrommorningtillevening,buttheydidnotgetoutoftheforest,andwereveryhungry,fortheyhadnothingtoeatbuttwoorthreeberries,whichgrewontheground. Andastheyweresowearythattheirlegswouldcarrythemnolonger,theylaydownbeneathatreeandfellasleep. 

           Itwasnowthreemorningssincetheyhadlefttheirfather’shouse.Theybegantowalkagain,buttheyalwaysgotdeeperintotheforest,andifhelpdidnotcomesoon,theymustdieofhungerandweariness. Whenitwasmid-day,theysawabeautifulsnow-whitebirdsittingonabough,whichsangsodelightfullythattheystoodstillandlistenedtoit.Andwhenithadfinisheditssong,itspreaditswingsandflewawaybeforethem,andtheyfollowedituntiltheyreachedalittlehouse,ontheroofofwhichitalighted;andwhentheycamequiteuptolittlehousetheysawthatitwasbuiltofbreadandcoveredwithcakes,butthatthewindowswereofclearsugar. "Wewillsettoworkonthat,"saidHansel,"andhaveagoodmeal.Iwilleatabitoftheroof,andthou,Grethel,cansteatsomeofthewindow,itwilltastesweet." Hanselreachedupabove,andbrokeoffalittleoftherooftotryhowittasted,andGrethelleantagainstthewindowandnibbledatthepanes. Thenasoftvoicecriedfromtheroom, 

           "Nibble,nibble,gnaw, Whoisnibblingatmylittlehouse?" 

           Thechildrenanswered, 

           "Thewind,thewind, Theheaven-bornwind," 

           andwentoneatingwithoutdisturbingthemselves.
