           "Irememberthatsheusedtothinkitverysillyofmetoburdenmyselfwithextrafooduponthemarch,thoughshewasquitegladtoeatitwithme,ifthewaychancedtobebarrenofsustenance."

           "Thenyouknewyourmother,Tarzan?"askedD’Arnot,insurprise.

           "Andyourfather?"askedD’Arnot.

           "Ididnotknowhim.Kalatoldmehewasawhiteape,andhairlesslikemyself.Iknownowthathemusthavebeenawhiteman."

           D’Arnotlookedlongandearnestlyathiscompanion.
