           D’Arnottaughthimmanyoftherefinementsofcivilizationeventotheuseofknifeandfork;butsometimesTarzanwoulddropthemindisgustandgrasphisfoodinhisstrongbrownhands,tearingitwithhismolarslikeawildbeast.

           ThenD’Arnotwouldexpostulatewithhim,saying:

           "Youmustnoteatlikeabrute,Tarzan,whileIamtryingtomakeagentlemanofyou.MONDIEU!Gentlemendonotthusitisterrible."

           Tarzanwouldgrinsheepishlyandpickuphisknifeandforkagain,butathearthehatedthem.

           OnthejourneyhetoldD’Arnotaboutthegreatchesthehadseenthesailorsbury;ofhowhehaddugitupandcarriedittothegatheringplaceoftheapesandburieditthere.

           "ItmustbethetreasurechestofProfessorPorter,"saidD’Arnot."Itistoobad,butofcourseyoudidnotknow."

           ThenTarzanrecalledtheletterwrittenbyJanetoherfriendtheonehehadstolenwhentheyfirstcametohiscabin,andnowheknewwhatwasinthechestandwhatitmeanttoJane.

           "To-morrowweshallgobackafterit,"heannouncedtoD’Arnot.

           "Goback?"exclaimedD’Arnot."But,mydearfellow,wehavenowbeenthreeweeksuponthemarch.Itwouldrequirethreemoretoreturntothetreasure,andthen,withthatenormousweightwhichrequired,yousay,foursailorstocarry,itwouldbemonthsbeforewehadagainreachedthisspot.
