           "Theymustintendreturning,"thoughtD’Arnot.

           HewalkedovertothetablethatJohnClaytonhadbuiltsomanyyearsbeforetoserveasadesk,andonithesawtwonotesaddressedtoTarzanoftheApes.

           Onewasinastrongmasculinehandandwasunsealed.Theother,inawoman’shand,wassealed.

           "Herearetwomessagesforyou,TarzanoftheApes,"criedD’Arnot,turningtowardthedoor;buthiscompanionwasnotthere.

           D’Arnotwalkedtothedoorandlookedout.Tarzanwasnowhereinsight.Hecalledaloudbuttherewasnoresponse.

           "MONDIEU!"exclaimedD’Arnot,"hehasleftme.Ifeelit.Hehasgonebackintohisjungleandleftmeherealone.
