           Ashesawwhathadbeendoneagreatwaveofangersurgedthroughhim,andthenewmadescaruponhisforeheadstoodsuddenlyout,abarofinflamedcrimsonagainsthistawnyhide.

           Quicklyherantothecupboardandsearchedinthefarrecessofthelowershelf.Ah!Hebreathedasighofreliefashedrewoutthelittletinbox,and,openingit,foundhisgreatesttreasuresundisturbed.

           Thephotographofthesmiling,strong-facedyoungman,andthelittleblackpuzzlebookweresafe.

           Whatwasthat?

           Hisquickearhadcaughtafaintbutunfamiliarsound.

           RunningtothewindowTarzanlookedtowardtheharbor,andtherehesawthataboatwasbeingloweredfromthegreatshipbesidetheonealreadyinthewater.Soonhesawmanypeopleclamberingoverthesidesofthelargervesselanddroppingintotheboats.Theywerecomingbackinfullforce.
