           Mbongacouldexplainnothingofthestrangeeventsthathadtakenplace.ThefindingofthestillwarmbodyofKulongaontheveryvergeoftheirfieldsandwithineasyearshotofthevillageknifedandstrippedatthedoorofhisfather’shome,wasinitselfsufficientlymysterious,buttheselastawesomediscoverieswithinthevillage,withinthedeadKulonga’sownhut,filledtheirheartswithdismay,andconjuredintheirpoorbrainsonlythemostfrightfulofsuperstitiousexplanations.

           Theystoodinlittlegroups,talkinginlowtones,andevercastingaffrightedglancesbehindthemfromtheirgreatrollingeyes.
