           Thefenceswasmadeofdifferentkindsofboards,nailedonatdifferenttimes;andtheyleanedeverywhichway,andhadgatesthatdidn’tgenerlyhavebutonehingealeatherone.Someofthefenceshadbeenwhite-washedsometimeoranother,butthedukesaiditwasinClumbus’time,likeenough.Therewasgenerlyhogsinthegarden,andpeopledrivingthemout.

           Allthestoreswasalongonestreet.Theyhadwhitedomesticawningsinfront,andthecountrypeoplehitchedtheirhorsestotheawning-posts.Therewasemptydrygoodsboxesundertheawnings,andloafersroostingonthemalldaylong,whittlingthemwiththeirBarlowknives;andchawingtobacco,andgapingandyawningandstretchingamightyornerylot.Theygenerlyhadonyellowstrawhatsmostaswideasanumbrella,butdidn’twearnocoatsnorwaistcoats,theycalledoneanotherBill,andBuck,andHank,andJoe,andAndy,andtalkedlazyanddrawly,andusedconsiderablemanycusswords.Therewasasmanyasoneloaferleaningupagainsteveryawning-post,andhemostalwayshadhishandsinhisbritches-pockets,exceptwhenhefetchedthemouttolendachawoftobaccoorscratch.Whatabodywashearingamongstthemallthetimewas:
