           Itdidindeed.TheMolewouldnothaveknownthatitwasthesamewood.However,theysetoutbravely,andtookthelinethatseemedmostpromising,holdingontoeachotherandpretendingwithinvinciblecheerfulnessthattheyrecognisedanoldfriendineveryfreshtreethatgrimlyandsilentlygreetedthem,orsawopenings,gaps,orpathswithafamiliarturninthem,inthemonotonyofwhitespaceandblacktree-trunksthatrefusedtovary.

           Anhourortwolatertheyhadlostallcountoftimetheypulledup,dispirited,weary,andhopelesslyatsea,andsatdownonafallentree-trunktorecovertheirbreathandconsiderwhatwastobedone.Theywereachingwithfatigueandbruisedwithtumbles;theyhadfallenintoseveralholesandgotwetthrough;thesnowwasgettingsodeepthattheycouldhardlydragtheirlittlelegsthroughit,andthetreeswerethickerandmorelikeeachotherthanever.Thereseemedtobenoendtothiswood,andnobeginning,andnodifferenceinit,and,worstofall,nowayout.

           "Wecan’tsithereverylong,"saidtheRat."Weshallhavetomakeanotherpushforit,anddosomethingorother.Thecoldistooawfulforanything,andthesnowwillsoonbetoodeepforustowadethrough.
