Theyhadapleasantramblethatdayovergrassydownsandalongnarrowby-lanes,andcamped,asbefore,onacommon,onlythistimethetwogueststookcarethatToadshoulddohisfairshareofwork.Inconsequence,whenthetimecameforstartingnextmorning,Toadwasbynomeanssorapturousaboutthesimplicityoftheprimitivelife,andindeedattemptedtoresumehisplaceinhisbunk,whencehewashauledbyforce.Theirwaylay,asbefore,acrosscountrybynarrowlanes,anditwasnottilltheafternoonthattheycameoutonthehigh-road,theirfirsthigh-road;andtheredisaster,fleetandunforeseen,sprangoutonthem—disastermomentousindeedtotheirexpedition,butsimplyoverwhelminginitseffectontheaftercareerofToad.
