Presentlyhesawthathewasapproachingabigdarkholeinthebank,justabovehishead,andasthestreamborehimpasthereachedupwithapawandcaughtholdoftheedgeandheldon.Thenslowlyandwithdifficultyhedrewhimselfupoutofthewater,tillatlasthewasabletoresthiselbowsontheedgeofthehole.Thereheremainedforsomeminutes,puffingandpanting,forhewasquiteexhausted.
Ashesighedandblewandstaredbeforehimintothedarkhole,somebrightsmallthingshoneandtwinkledinitsdepths,movingtowardshim.Asitapproached,afacegrewupgraduallyaroundit,anditwasafamiliarface!
Brownandsmall,withwhiskers.
Graveandround,withneatearsandsilkyhair.
