           Startingoncemore,Icrossedthestreettotheright-handsideinordertoedgearoundintoBabsonasinconspicuouslyaspossible.NoisesstillcontinuedinFederalStreet,andasIglancedbehindmeIthoughtIsawagleamoflightnearthebuildingthroughwhichIhadescaped.AnxioustoleaveWashingtonStreet,Ibrokeintoaquietdogtrot,trustingtolucknottoencounteranyobservingeye.NextthecornerofBabsonStreetIsawtomyalarmthatoneofthehouseswasstillinhabited,asattestedbycurtainsatthewindow;buttherewerenolightswithin,andIpasseditwithoutdisaster.

           InBabsonStreet,whichcrossedFederalandmightthusrevealmetothesearchers,Iclungascloselyaspossibletothesagging,unevenbuildings;twicepausinginadoorwayasthenoisesbehindmemomentarilyincreased.Theopenspaceaheadshonewideanddesolateunderthemoon,butmyroutewouldnotforcemetocrossit.
